Dreaming of smoother, fuller skin? Then you need needling! [Guest post by Nicki Dadic]

After complaining about my deep set frown lines, Kerry at Aura Skincare Clinic in Parkhurst recommended I come in for Needling, or collagen induction therapy.

Without even thinking, I agreed to pop in for the treatment and assumed (maybe crossing my wires with threading and needling) that it would be a quick in and out treatment, focussed solely on my problem area, which are the frown lines on my forehead, brought on by spending hours in front of my laptop for work. I’ve also struggled with my skin for about 7 or 8 months, after having a Mirena inserted last year. My hormones have been all over the place and my skin was the first place to show it. I had underlying cyst-like pimples that were painful and swollen. My back and chest were also covered in a rash of spots, which was soul destroying, to say the least. I started Cyclimycin, which has been a miracle drug for me, clearing my skin in a matter of weeks. The side-effects, however, weren’t fun at all. Dry, dehydrated and flaky skin had me searching high and low for the ultimate moisturiser and I tried far too many products, with very little improvement at all. My skin also started to look older, mainly because of the severe lack of proper hydration, with my fine lines and those pesky frown lines becoming even more prominent.

Fast forward to a week ago. I walk into Aura to meet with Kerry and get going on my needling (also known as collagen induction therapy, which is defined as "an aesthetic medical procedure that involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with a sterile needle in order to induce endogenous production of cutaneous collagen") session, which begins with a cleanse to remove any makeup and then a thick layer of anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin to numb it before the needling treatment. The treatment starts off pretty tame, with just the slightest bit of pain along the hairline. I felt discomfort around my nose and mouth too, but the most off-putting was around my eyes and on my eyelids, which is obviously quite a soft, sensitive area. I also wear contact lenses and had not thought to wear my glasses for the treatment, so my eyes were quite sensitive.

The full treatment took around 30-40 minutes and afterwards, Kerry covered my face in RégimA Zone Laser Azu-Repair (The Blue Gel) and I took, on her recommendation, Quantum Elastin Dermal Regenerator to apply as an alternative to the blue gel. Because Kerry had prepared me for what I would look like after the treatment, I wasn’t too shocked, but I did look shocking! It was as if I was severely sunburnt! Kerry said that different people react differently and have varying recovery times, but that within 2/3 days, the redness and swelling would subside. I’d highly suggest that, should you decide to do a needling treatment, that you do so on a Friday midday, with NO plans for the rest of the weekend as you’ll need to be makeup-free and indoors for the recovery period.

Despite feeling VERY self-concious about my red, swollen face immediately after the treatment, I cannot recommend this enough. Eight days later, my skin is glowing, soft and smooth. My frown lines are less prominent and the overall quality of my skin has noticeably improved.

Two weeks after the procedure, and right into the thick of Joburg’s dry winter, my skin is full, soft and smooth. Looking forward to my next needling session and even more beautiful skin with Aura!
