Skin Needling.

So, if you follow my blog, you would have seen a guest post by my friend, Nicki Dadic, giving you the low down on skin needling at Aura. You'll also know that I declined, at least twice, the offer to review, skin needling. The whole concept had me quite concerned. And... have a look at this thing...

Yikes! Right?!

But, Nicki's skin continued to look better and better. I was intrigued. And slightly more brave...

And then, Kerry, my all time favourite therapist, assured me that it looked much worse than it actually is and after you have done the skin needling, your skin continues to improve and regenerate for 28 days, and let's be honest. Any one who reads this blog, knows that I am completely obsessed with beautiful, healthy skin {and great eyebrows.} So... I made a booking.

Let's start at the beginning. An anaesthetic cream is applied to your face and then it is covered in plastic. You are left for 20 minutes... covered in plastic and your face... on it's way to complete, numbness.

And, it starts. I will admit, those 5 needles and that noise, really do look worse than what it actually feels (or lack there of) like. The parts of my face that I definitely did feel pain, were my forehead, eyelids and jaw bone. The nose was uncomfortable and more ticklish than anything else. All in all, really quick and relatively painless.

Cut to, the first glimpse of my face- literally, one minute after.

I'm smiling... !

Yup, looking pretty sore. It was actually just warm. My face felt exceptionally warm. It continued to feel that way up until the next day.

This photo was taken, as I pulled into my driveway. About 20 minutes after having had the treatment. The gel had been applied and I would say at this point, I was feeling the most discomfort and my face felt like it was on fire. It looks a lot like it too. Not so pretty, right?

The RegimA gel that Aura provide for you, soothes it and really helps make the *sting, a little better. I won't lie, it's pretty uncomfortable and not being able to wash my face, was hard for me. I kept applying the gel each time I felt a bit uncomfortable and it really did help.

The next day, it still looked puffy and you can still see the little needle pricks in parts of my skin, especially the forehead, but the heat had gone.

A little battered and bruised but not bad, for one day later, right?

And, exactly 2 weeks later, this was my skin...

Smooth, plump and fewer frown lines and... no crows feet.

And 30 days later, I had a photo shoot, and my skin was the best it has ever looked.

So, here's the thing. For R1200. You can reduce wrinkles & scarring. Your skin looks and feels fantastic. The collagen makes your face plump and tight again.

Would I do it again? Absolutely! Would I recommend it? 100%. Once you start needling, it is advised, that in the first year, you try and do it every 3 months. The next year, every 6 months and from the third year, it is only recommended to go once a year. ONCE A YEAR! Do you know, how many skin products you will save on? For youthful, plump & flawless skin, do needling. Really!

Ps. For the actual technical process of skin needling, see Nicki's guest blog post.

Dreaming of smoother, fuller skin? Then you need needling! [Guest post by Nicki Dadic]

After complaining about my deep set frown lines, Kerry at Aura Skincare Clinic in Parkhurst recommended I come in for Needling, or collagen induction therapy.

Without even thinking, I agreed to pop in for the treatment and assumed (maybe crossing my wires with threading and needling) that it would be a quick in and out treatment, focussed solely on my problem area, which are the frown lines on my forehead, brought on by spending hours in front of my laptop for work. I’ve also struggled with my skin for about 7 or 8 months, after having a Mirena inserted last year. My hormones have been all over the place and my skin was the first place to show it. I had underlying cyst-like pimples that were painful and swollen. My back and chest were also covered in a rash of spots, which was soul destroying, to say the least. I started Cyclimycin, which has been a miracle drug for me, clearing my skin in a matter of weeks. The side-effects, however, weren’t fun at all. Dry, dehydrated and flaky skin had me searching high and low for the ultimate moisturiser and I tried far too many products, with very little improvement at all. My skin also started to look older, mainly because of the severe lack of proper hydration, with my fine lines and those pesky frown lines becoming even more prominent.

Fast forward to a week ago. I walk into Aura to meet with Kerry and get going on my needling (also known as collagen induction therapy, which is defined as "an aesthetic medical procedure that involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with a sterile needle in order to induce endogenous production of cutaneous collagen") session, which begins with a cleanse to remove any makeup and then a thick layer of anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin to numb it before the needling treatment. The treatment starts off pretty tame, with just the slightest bit of pain along the hairline. I felt discomfort around my nose and mouth too, but the most off-putting was around my eyes and on my eyelids, which is obviously quite a soft, sensitive area. I also wear contact lenses and had not thought to wear my glasses for the treatment, so my eyes were quite sensitive.

The full treatment took around 30-40 minutes and afterwards, Kerry covered my face in RégimA Zone Laser Azu-Repair (The Blue Gel) and I took, on her recommendation, Quantum Elastin Dermal Regenerator to apply as an alternative to the blue gel. Because Kerry had prepared me for what I would look like after the treatment, I wasn’t too shocked, but I did look shocking! It was as if I was severely sunburnt! Kerry said that different people react differently and have varying recovery times, but that within 2/3 days, the redness and swelling would subside. I’d highly suggest that, should you decide to do a needling treatment, that you do so on a Friday midday, with NO plans for the rest of the weekend as you’ll need to be makeup-free and indoors for the recovery period.

Despite feeling VERY self-concious about my red, swollen face immediately after the treatment, I cannot recommend this enough. Eight days later, my skin is glowing, soft and smooth. My frown lines are less prominent and the overall quality of my skin has noticeably improved.

Two weeks after the procedure, and right into the thick of Joburg’s dry winter, my skin is full, soft and smooth. Looking forward to my next needling session and even more beautiful skin with Aura!

Progress from the day of the treatment until day 7, without makeup:

A hidden gem in Parkhurst...

I love Parkhurst and have always had my favourite breakfast, lunch and dinner spots, and of course my favourite hair salon but I had never found my favourite salon, for waxing, nails and the real treats like facials and massages. That was up until a little while ago when I stumbled upon the hidden gem, Aura Skincare.

Not only do they offer pretty much every skincare and nail treatment available but the women that work there are friendly, fun and add the sparkle that is missing in so many of these sorts of places.

Aura recently opened a nail bar which could quite possible be my new favourite thing! Four massage chairs, every kind of nail polish (gelish, shellac, essie).

So while you might just be booking your nails for a little you-time pampering, you could also choose to invite 3 of your besties to join you. Or your mother or even, yes, even your significant other (my husband loves a good pedicure.) And actually what a great way to spend time with each other?

You are also able to book pamper parties, a bottle of champagne included in the price (BEST IDEA!) They also offer cocktails to order, delicious cappucino’s AND the best milk tart. EVER!

Prices are reasonable, they are always having such great specials. The group of women that work there are professional, friendly and really good at what they do. I learn a new beauty tip each time I’m there.

So book an appointment for you and 3 of your friends and come an enjoy a massage, a mani, pedi and the drink of your choice.

You will find them at 65 6th Street, Parkhurst. You can book via SMS 071 889 8572 or

The non-invasive solution to anti-aging.

The Matis in Rosebank, spoilt me with a NIR (Near infrared) treatment.

The NIR is a safe infrared light that heats the tissue under the skin's surface, tightening skin laxity and improving skin architecture.  It stimulates the formation of new collagen enhancing the tightening effect and helping to bolster the skin against future ageing.  The presence of healthy collagen in the dermis helps maintain the skin's youthful resiliency and texture.  Suitable treatment areas are the face and neck and some areas of the body depending on the amount of skin laxity.  This treatment is non-invasive, non-painful and suitable for all skin types and ages.

Matis will be running a competition where you can WIN three NIR treatments. For more details, follow me on Instagram.
